A bumper is a Flat race but it is under the rules of Jump racing even it is a race without jumps. It is run at a National Hunt meet and horses must be aged seven years or under and must not have raced in a National Hunt meet before. The reason for a bumper race is to familiarize horses with running at racecourses without adding the further strain of them needing to jump hurdles or fences. The rules of jump racing require that no starting gate is used, only with a rope that has been stretched across the track. and when the rope drops the race will begin.

Horses normally race in bumpers to gain experience of horse racing before they go hurdling or chasing.  Bumper races also allow horses to get used to racing at speeds they won’t have been asked to run at in their stable work.  They tend to take place over a distance of between 13 and 20 furlongs, but even this is not set in stone, with each meeting allowed to set their own rules and regulations.

History of bumper races is actually a long and colorful history. They are technically referred to Britain and Ireland as a National Hunt Flat race and they can trace their origins to 1891.

There are lots of theories as to why they are called bumpers. One is that only conditional & amateur riders were originally allowed to ride in these races. Lacking race experience, horses and jockeys ended up bumping into each other.

Betting on bumper races is one of the richest sources of upsets you can find in racing betting. That’s because these horses are untested at racecourses and so it’s notoriously hard to predict a winner. Just beware that these types of gambles often snowball and the odds that you take may no longer represent value. The most interesting gambles in bumpers are often the late ones, where shrewd smaller 온라인경마 stables allow their horses to drift all day before backing their horse late when they’re happy they’ve got to the track and are ready to land a gamble.
